Scorch a plank of maple wood with a high-powered torch. (Do not try this at home unless you are an experienced torch-wielder.)
Extinguish the flame with a glass and leave it there to soak up the smoke.
In a mixing glass, pour 2 ounces of bourbon.
Add 1/2 ounce simple syrup made with light brown sugar.
Add 1/4 ounce of aromatic bitters.
Stir stoically.
Flip the smoke-filled glass over and add one very large ice cube. Then strain the cocktail into the glass.
Serve with flare.
